AC Mitigation

AC power is not typically found on pipelines. If an AC voltage is present on a pipeline, it has come from one of three effects: inductive, capacitive or conductive coupling. AC currents flowing through power line conductors cause alternating magnetic fields to be set up around the conductors. These magnetic fields in turn induce opposing AC voltages in any metallic object that is within the influence of the power line. Pipe walls can be affected by AC interference through AC corrosion, external coating damage and pipe wall damage. AC mitigation for pipelines can be designed, installed, and maintained to minimize the induced voltage on the system. This can be accomplished by installation of grounding techniques, such as grounding rods attached to the pipeline.

Some of our previous projects for AC Mitigation include:

  • AC Electrical Interference modeling and design for Pembina Pipeline Corporation regarding the AltaLink Heartland 500kV power line project.
  • AC Electrical Interference study for the Pembina Pipelines facilities affected by the new ATCO Electric Edith Lake power line, the new AltaLink Spruce Grove 595S substation and area growth, and in Drayton Valley affected by the new AltaLink power line 673L
  • We also did a DC Electrical Interference project for Pembina Pipelines on their facilities are affected by the proposed WATL 500kV HVDC power line.
  • We did AC Electrical Interference study program on Kinder Morgan 6” Jet Fuel line for Kinder Morgan Canada on Lulu Island. Evaluated AC corrosion concerns near Jones Hill rectifier on the TransMountain Pipeline for Kinder Morgan Canada, and a DC Electrical Interference study on Kinder Morgan 6” Jet Fuel line due to the operation of the Canada Line Sky Train on Sea Island in Vancouver.
  • We have done extensive AC Electrical Interference study work for ATCO for the ATCO Pipelines facilities affected by the new AltaLink Spruce Grove 595S substation and area growth, AltaLink Yellowhead Transmission Reinforcement Project – Edson to Hinton. AC Electrical Interference study, design and installation for the ATCO Pipelines Priddis Extension Project, the Bragg Creek pipeline system, SEEP pipeline system in the Edmonton area, and Muskeg River Pipeline project.
